Walk for about 10 minutes from Ueda Castle and you come to Yanagimachi. Constructed more than 100 years ago, the large village headman’s house and street lined with rows of sake breweries make you feel like you’ve wandered into a historical drama.
At present, this historic scenery is being preserved while the buildings are refurbished into purveyors of local sake and wine, Shinshu soba noodles and oidare yakitori (char-broiled chicken), and bakeries using natural yeast or making local sweets, delighting visitors. * Please be advised that many shops are closed Wednesdays.
